The Getty Center Los Angeles
The
Getty Center in Los Angeles was especially designed to showcase the Getty's
unique collection of Western art, from the Middle Ages to the present, against a
backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. The
Getty Museum collection includes European paintings, drawings, illuminated
manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts, antiquities, and European and American
photographs. A ten-minute video provides an introduction to the art collection
as well as information about tours and other activities to help you make the
most of your visit. Several tours are available, but highly recommended is the
Orchestral Tour which provides a greater understanding of the immense effort and
difficulties
involved in constructing of this fabulous facility. The Garden Tour also is
another popular choice for visitors. Lunch is on your own. The Café at the Getty
is self-service and has sandwiches, soups, salads, pizzas, pastas, grilled
items; beer and wine is also available. There also are several coffee carts and
the Terrace Café for lighter fare, and indoor and outdoor dining areas to enjoy
your meal. The Museum Store is available for those who wish to commemorate their
visit with a souvenir. We will make a mystery stop on the way home. Join us for
this always popular tour.

Flower Fields at Carlsbad
More
than six decades ago, an English horticulturist named Luther Gage moved to
Southern California, bringing with him his special interest in the beautiful
Ranunculus flower, and in particular, the giant strain known as Tecolote. His
collection of seeds subsequently resulted in the first Ranunculus flowers to be
planted in North America. Upon arrival, we will have a Guided Walking Tour which
includes the field’s history, the planting process and growing cycle, and
descriptions of the varieties grown. There will be time to sit, relax and enjoy
the beautiful views of these magnificent flower fields and the ocean
beyond.
This is the weekend of the Annual Arts & Crafts Fair which features an array of
outstanding paintings, photography, pottery, and crafts for sale. There is also
music. Next, it is off to Carlsbad Premium Outlets for lunch on your own.
Choices include fast food, elegant dining and everything in between. You will be
provided a list of eating places, stores and shops as well as discount coupons.
Remember, we can take large things in the coach but you must transport them home
from the college.

Balboa Island Artwalk and Newport Harbor
Cruise
The
Balboa Island Artwalk is a showcase of many talented local artists. The show is
held on Balboa Island's South Bayfront Promenade from Marine Avenue to Pearl
Avenue, over a mile of art! This is a juried art show; not all artists are
accepted. Last year, over 90 artists exhibited original art. This year, many
artists will be present to discuss their work and answer any questions. The show
will feature paintings, sculptures, pottery, glass works, jewelry and
photographs. And yes, all the art is for sale! Highlighting our walk is live
music all along the promenade. Later, we will take a ferry over to the Newport
Peninsula and board our chartered
boat
for a 90-minute cruise of Newport Harbor. We will cruise to the entrance of the
harbor and hopefully view the local sea lions in their natural habitat. Our
narrated tour continues as we cruise by the homes of the “rich and famous.”
There are a number of majestic multi-million dollar homes, many with yachts in
personal docks. Our journey also will provide exclusive views of all seven
islands in the bay. The cruise includes a box lunch.
